Sd Alcohol 40-B is a type of denatured alcohol. The Sd stands for Specially denatured, while the 40-B is the formula code, indicating that to every 100 gallons of alcohol, one-sixteenth avoirdupois ounce of denatonium benzoate and 0.125 gallons of tert-butyl alcohol need to be added as a denaturant. Sd alcohol is specifically formulated to be unfit for human consumption and is also exempt from standard alcohol tax rates.

Sd Alcohol 40-B contains <1% denatonium benzoate and <1% tert-butyl alcohol.
