1. Drug / Medicine - Treats, alleviates, cures, or prevents sickness. As officially declared by a governmental drug/medicine regulatory body
Portulaca oleracea (common purslane, also known as verdolaga, red root, or pursley) is an annual succulent in the family Portulacaceae. It has smooth, reddish, mostly prostrate stems and the leaves which may be alternate or opposite, are clustered at stem joints and ends.
Purslane may be eaten as a leaf vegetable. It has a slightly sour and salty taste and is eaten as salad, stir-fried and cooked as soups and stews throughout much of Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Mexico. The stems, leaves and flower buds are all edible.
Purslane is used as a herbal medicine in many countries, acting as a diuretic, febrifuge, vermifuge, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic and has pharmacological activities including analgesic, anti-bacterial, skeletal muscle-relaxant, wound- healing, anti-inflammatory, radical scavenger and anti-convulsant [1].
It has skin-soothing properties and is a potent antioxidant due to its high amounts of vitamins A (as beta-carotene), C, and E (alpha-tocopherol) as well as other antioxidant compounds such as glutathione.
