About:

Functions:
1. Sunscreen - Physical sunscreens work by deflecting or scattering UV rays. Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing and dissipating the UV rays as heat.
Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid is commonly used as a sunscreen agent.
Recent Findings:
Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid (PBSA) degrades rapidly via radical photodegradation with the process being faster than biological degradation. [2] However, further additional analysis is needed on the photoproducts formed from the photodegradation of PBSA. [2]
In an in vitro study conducted, PBSA showed no "measurable binding affinity" for DNA and hence the probability of photosensitization is expected to be low. [3] It also "stressed that extensive animal and human studies have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of PBSA and other sunscreens in protecting skin from the injurious effects of solar UV radiation". [3]
A review found that PBSA is also commonly combined with octyl methoxycinnamate. [4] That "2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid, were potential carcinogens based on these in vitro data" with " 2-phenyl-benzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid, prevented UVB-induced cyclobutane dimer formation in human skin". [4]
