Ethylparaben (ethyl para-hydroxybenzoate) is the ethyl ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. It is a member of the class of compounds known as parabens.
It is used as an antifungal and antibacterial synthetic preservative in tablets and capsules. It is more effective against yeasts and fungi than against bacteria. It is approved to use as a food additive (E214) and cosmetics preservative in the EU.
Has proven to have high retention rates in the human body and in marine animals, which may lead to eventual toxicity. [2][3][4][5] Can be detected in human breast tissue with breast cancer since it is able to "act like a very weak estrogen in the body". [6]
