About:

Functions:
1. Antiseptic / Disinfectant - Prevents growth of unwanted microorganisms.
2. Astringent - Causes the contraction of body tissues, typically of the skin.
3. Bulking Agent - Non-nutritious or inactive substances added to increase stability of the mixture.
4. Flavor / Flavoring / Flavor Enhancer - Provides or enhances a particular taste or smell.
5. Permeation Enhancer (Cosmetics) - Improves the absorption of ingredients through the skin
6. Solvent (Cosmetics) - Enhances the properties of other ingredients
Ethanol, also called alcohol, ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, and drinking alcohol, is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid with a slight characteristic odor. It is a psychoactive substance and is the principal type of alcohol found in alcoholic drinks.
Ethanol is naturally produced by the fermentation of sugars by yeasts or via petrochemical processes and is most commonly consumed as a popular recreational drug. It also has medical applications as an antiseptic and disinfectant. The compound is widely used as a chemical solvent, either for scientific chemical testing or in the synthesis of other organic compounds, and is a vital substance utilized across many different kinds of manufacturing industries. Ethanol is also used as a clean-burning fuel source.
Denatured alcohol, mostly being used in cosmetic products, is a mixture of ethanol with a denaturing agent. The denaturing agent is added to prevent the consumption of alcohol without taxes. It makes the alcohol unfit for consumption without altering the chemistry of ethanol itself. Most allergies to alcohol stem from being allergic to the denaturing agent instead of ethanol.
This is an Unapproved E-number (E1510). This means that the E-number of E1510 is associated with ethanol used as a food additive, but it is not in the official list of E-numbers.
Recent Findings:
This ingredient has been designated by the Singaporean Government to be effective against coronaviruses. "As the COVID-19 virus is new, no study has been published on the virus. This assessment is thus based on published scientific studies on coronaviruses, a group to which the COVID-19 virus would belong."
A minimum concentration of 70% is sufficient to be effective against coronaviruses.
Health advice from the Hong Kong government:
-Home should be cleaned thoroughly at least once per week with 1 in 99 diluted household bleach (mixing 10 ml of bleach containing 5.25% sodium hypochlorite with 990 ml of water), leave for 15 - 30 minutes and then rinse with water. For metallic surface, disinfect with 70% alcohol.
-If places are contaminated by respiratory secretions, vomitus or excreta, use strong absorbent disposable towels to clean up the visible matter. Then disinfect the surface and the neighbouring area with appropriate disinfectant. For non-metallic surface, disinfect with 1 in 49 diluted household bleach (mixture of 10ml of household bleach containing 5.25% hypochlorite solution with 490ml of water), leave for 15 - 30 minutes, and then rinse with water. For metallic surface, disinfect with 70% alcohol.
