Isobutane is a colorless gas with a faint petroleum-like odor. It is shipped as a liquefied gas under its vapor pressure.
Isobutane is used as a refrigerant. As a food additive (E943B), isobutane is used as a propellant in aerosol spray cans for vegetable oil-based aerosol cooking sprays and water-based emulsion cooking sprays. it is used as a propellant and aerating agent in foamed or sprayed food products. It is also used as part of blended fuels, especially common in fuel canisters used for camping.
It is approved to use as food additive in EU.
Isobutane is only banned if it contains >0.1% w/w of 1,3-butadiene.
